"The Screan" is the best known work of Munch of which 4 versions exist. It was stolen in 2004 together with "Madonna" from the Munch Museum in Oslo by 2 armed robbers when the museum was crowded with visitors. In 2006 the 2 paintings were retrieved.
Edvard Munch - Love And Pain
This painting was stolen in 1988 from the Munch Museum in Oslo. It was retreived later that year when a former Norwegian footballer Paal Enger contacted the police. Apparently he was also one of the four man convicted and sentenced in connection with the later 1994 theft during the opening of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer that included a version of "The Scream" by Munch as well.
Leonardo Da Vinci - Mona Lisa
The fact the painting was stolen in 1911 by an Italian man working for the museum made the painting famous. It was retrieved in 1913 when he tried to contact an art dealer. He said he intended to return it to Italy.
Claude Monet - Sunrise
This painting was stolen among 8 other impressionist works from the Marmottan Museum in Paris in 1985 by a group of armed robbers. All 9 works were retrieved from a villa on Corsica in 1990.
Vincent Van Gogh - Poppy Flowers
It was first stolen in 1887 from Cairo's Mohamed Mahmoud Khali Museum. It was recovered in Kuwait after a decade long search but was stolen again in 2010 and still missing.
Vincent Van Gogh - The Potato Eaters
This painting has been stolen twice. First in 1988 from the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands. It was recovered in 1989. The second robbery was in 1991 when it was stolen together with 19 other art works from the Vincent Van Gogh National Museum in Amsterdam. The getwaway car had a flat tire forcing the robbers to leave and abandon the artworks. They were retrieved in 35 minutes this time.
Rembrandt Van Rijn - A Lady And Gentelman In Black
Stolen in 1990 from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Boston. Together with 12 other art works they were stolen by 2 people pretending to be police officers. The paintings have never been recovered.

This one was also part of the stolen artworks from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Boston.
Paul Cézanne - View Of Auvers-Sur-Oise
Stolen on December 31, 1999 during fireworks to celebrate the new year. The noise of the fireworks distracted from the burglary. They only steal this painting and it was never retrieved.
Peter Paul Rubens - The Crowning Of Saint Catherine
This painting was stolen by Nazi Hermann Göring from the private collection of German Leopold Koppel. It was found by American soldiers in a salt mine at the end of World War II. Leopold's son Albert recovered it and sold it to the current owner of the collection from Leopold Koppel in 1950 with other works.
Johannes Vermeer - Lady Writing A Letter With Her Maid
Armed members of the IRA (Irish Republican Army) stole it in 1974 from Sir Alfred Beit's Russborough House residence. The painting was found back 8 days later. But in 1986 it was stolen again by a group of the Irish criminal Martin Cahill. He demanded 20 million Irish Pounds for it but he never received the money. It was retrieved in 1993 during an operation by the Irish Police at the Antwerp Airport.

Two famous paintings and a sketch were stolen from Greece's National Gallery by two burglars. They stole Pablo Picasso's "Head Of A Woman" and "Stammer Windmill" by Piet Mondrian. The sketch was from Giglielmo Caccia's "St. Diego de Alcala in Ecstasy with the Holy Trinity and the symbols of Passion". The paintings and sketch were retrieved in 2021 from a gorge near Athens.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Passage Bords De Seine
It was stolen in November 1951 at the Baltimore Museum of Art. It appeared again in 2012 when a woman named Marcia Fuqua brough the painting to an auction house in Alexandria (Virginia, US) with the intention of selling it. She claimed to have bought it at a flea market in West Virginia. This was never confirmed. It was returned to the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2013.
Frans Hals - Two Laughing Boys With A Mug Of Beer
The painting has been stolen three times in 1988, 2011 and 2020. The third time it was stolen from the Hofje van Mevrouw Van Aerden Museum in Leerdam (Netherlands). They arrested a 58-year-old man in 2021 for suspicion of stealing paintings by Frans Hals and Vincent van Gogh. He was found guilty and was given an eigh-year jail term. Sadly this painting was never recovered.

Together with Van Gogh's "Beach At Scheveningen In Stormy Weather" it was stolen in December 2002 from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It was found back in 2016 by the Itialian police in a village near Naples.
